As you probably know, I hate e-mail. But I love the Sparrow. And I love Shortmail. These two services are trying to ease the pain, i.e., the email is in two different ways. Sparrow makes a pretty e-mail. Shortmail makes short e-mail. Today, the two are combined.

The latest version of the Sparrow (1.3.2), which just went live in the Mac App Store now includes support for Shortmail. It must be specified using settings-account but > is pretty straight forward. In fact, it's simply connect through IMAP client, but Sparrow it comes with a nice little bonus: count characters.

The whole idea behind Shortmail that letter too long and should be limited to Twitter as a fashion. However, instead of 140 characters, Shortmail gives users 500 characters to send e-mail messages. If you connect an account Shortmail Sparrow, it will now honor that limiting the number of characters and show you how many characters of each message is in the input.

This goes along with 410 Labs ' (Shortmail's parent company) limited the proposal to add a new header for the e-mail displays the number of characters (if they exist). Sparrow is the first to get on board with this. I hope others will too — * cough * Google * cough *. I think this is more reasonable than I hope that the email simply dies completely.

New Sparrow comes with a number of other new features, tweaks and fixes. You can find here. And you can find Shortmail here.
